Motion Director

The Motion Director is an AI planning assistant that helps you turn a rough idea into a high-quality, Remotion-aware brief. It knows the animation constraints, your project's fixed video settings and your uploaded assets — so the brief it produces yields a better video than a one-line prompt. It's a planning tool: it doesn't render anything itself; it hands a polished prompt to the agent.

Opening it

On the Animation tab, click Open Motion Director on the Motion Director card. A large modal opens with three areas — a Storyboard (left), a Director chat (right) and a Final prompt (bottom). The header shows the project's read-only settings (name · dimensions · fps · duration).

Step 1 — Describe your video

Type what you want in the Director chat and click Ask Director — e.g. "A 15-second hype reel for our team's cup-final win." The Director replies and proposes a storyboard as editable scene cards.

Step 2 — Refine the storyboard

Each scene card is editable:

  • Title — a short name for the scene.
  • From frame / Duration (frames) — where the scene starts and how long it runs.
  • Layout — how elements are arranged on screen.
  • Motion — the animation style for the scene.
  • Assets — which uploaded assets (by filename) this scene uses.

Refine in two ways:

  • Edit the cards directly — changes save automatically (no AI call, no cost).
  • Chat with the Director — "make the intro punchier", "add a scene for the trophy lift", "swap scene 2 to use stadium_crowd.mp4". The Director returns the full updated storyboard.

Add scenes with + Add scene; remove one with its delete control. A frame-sum indicator shows whether the scenes add up to the project's total duration — it's a gentle warning, never a blocker.

Asset awareness

The Director sees your uploaded assets (listed in the asset strip) and decides, per scene, whether to use one or build from shapes/text — inferring what each asset is from its filename. Upload assets before planning so it can weave them in.

Step 3 — Get the final prompt

As you refine, the Director keeps a consolidated Final prompt at the bottom — an authoritative brief that restates the goal, style and pacing with a scene-by-scene breakdown and exact frame ranges. You can edit it directly, and use Copy to reuse it elsewhere.

Step 4 — Apply to Chat

Click Apply to Chat ▶ and confirm. The final prompt is sent to the agent and the animation starts generating — you stay on the Animation tab and watch the Live Preview build the video. From there, iterate by chatting as usual.

Starting a new storyboard

New storyboard clears the storyboard, chat and prompt so you can plan a different video. Your session is saved per project and restored when you reopen the Director; starting a New Project also clears it.
